Philippe Chambon, M.D., Ph.D.

Phillipe Chambon, is a Managing Director and founder of New Leaf Venture Partners, LLC (NLV Partners). NLV Partners recently came about with the spin-off of the healthcare team from The Sprout Group. Prior to NLV, Philippe was a General Partner at Sprout which he joined in 1995. He has been a founding investor in five companies, and led multiple later stage investments and one buy-out. He is an active investor in all three sectors of interest for NLV. In addition to serving on VaxInnate's board of directors, Philippe serves on the boards of directors of Artisan Pharma, Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Aureon Biosciences, BioRelix, ePocrates and NxStage Medical. His prior investments include Cephalon, Focus Technologies, Sapient Health Network (WebMD), Charles River Laboratories and Combichem. Immediately prior to joining Sprout, Philippe was a Manager in the healthcare practice of the Boston Consulting Group. Previously, Philippe was an executive with Sandoz Pharmaceutical for seven years, where he built and led an organization responsible for late stage clinical project management, portfolio management, and pre-marketing activities. He conducted graduate research in molecular immunology at The Pasteur Institute. He earned an MD and PhD from the University of Paris, and an MBA from Columbia University.


 

Thomas Hofstaetter, Ph.D.

Prior to joining VaxInnate, Dr. Hofstaetter spent more than 30 years in leadership positions at research-based pharmaceutical companies. He held executive roles in research and development, as well as strategy and business development, during postings around the world, including the United States, Japan, France and his native Germany. During his service at Wyeth from 2004 until the firm’s acquisition by Pfizer in 2009, Dr. Hofstaetter was Senior Vice President of Corporate Business Development and a member of both the Wyeth Management Committee, and the Pharmaceuticals Management Team. A biochemist by training, Dr. Hofstaetter holds a PhD in Molecular Biology, magna cum laude, and a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Tuebingen in Germany. Dr. Hofstaetter began his pharmaceutical industry career in 1978, when he joined Behringwerke AG in Marburg, Germany, as a research scientist, rising to become Head of Research and later General Manager of the Business Unit for Immunology and Oncology. From 1991 through 1994 he served as General Manager of the Pharmaceuticals Unit of Hoechst Japan in Tokyo. He moved to the United States in 1995 to become Senior Vice President of Business Development and Strategy for Hoechst Marion Roussel. From 1999 to 2004, Dr. Hofstaetter was Senior Vice President of Corporate Development at Aventis.



 

Augustine Lawlor

Gus Lawlor is the Managing Partner of HealthCare Ventures LLC. He has over twenty years operating experience in the health care biotechnology industry in finance, business development, mergers and acquisitions, and general management. Before joining HelathCare Ventures, Gus was Chief Operating Officer of LeukoSite, Inc. Prior to LeukoSite, he was Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Corporate Development for Alpha-Beta Technology. He was previously Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Business Development of BioSurface Technology. Gus serves on the Boards of Directors of Catalyst Biosciences, in S. San Francisco, CA; Dynogen Pharmaceuticals, in Boston, MA; FoldRx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., in Cambridge, MA; GlobeImmune, Inc., in Aurora CO; Human Genome Sciences, Inc., in Rockville, MD; Promedior, Inc., in Malvern, PA; Replidyne, Inc., in Louisville, CO; Synovex Corporation, in Cambridge, MA; U.S. Genomics, in Woburn, MA; and the Slater Center in Providence, RI. He received a Master's Degree in Management from Yale University.


 

Seth Rudnick, M.D.

Seth Rudnick joined Canaan in 1998 as a Venture Partner focusing on healthcare investments. He became a General Partner in 2000. His background in the healthcare industry includes comprehensive experience in research, development, clinical trials analysis and biotechnology, as well as founding and growing start-up companies in the industry. Seth currently sits on the boards of Adlyfe, Orthocon, Sopherion, and Spine Wave. Prior to joining Canaan, Seth served as CEO and Chairman at CytoTherapeutics (CTII). Before that, he helped start and served as head of R&D for Ortho Biotech, a division of Johnson & Johnson. In that role, he led the development efforts for a portfolio of projects which are still responsible for significant Johnson and Johnson revenues. He began his industrial career at Schering-Plough where he ran clinical trials for the alpha interferon project, and later transferred to Biogen to run that company's pharmaceutical development efforts. His academic career began when he served on the medical and public health faculty at Chapel Hill. Seth is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Chapel Hill where he teaches and advises the faculty on biotechnology issues. Recently, Seth was included in the 2006 Midas List, a prominent venture capital listing which ranks the best dealmakers in high-tech and life sciences.
 

 

Alan Shaw, Ph.D.

Dr. Shaw joined VaxInnate from the Merck Vaccine Research Division where he was Executive Director of MVD's Public Policy, Public Health and Medical Affairs Department. Prior to this, he was the Executive Director of Virus & Cell Biology at Merck Research Laboratories, responsible for all the aspects of live virus vaccine research, as well as technical aspects of development and production. His responsibilities covered research and early development of recombinant protein-based vaccines. Dr. Shaw was instrumental in the development of a combination measles-mumps-rubella-varicell vaccine (ProQuad®), a live oral rotavirus vaccine, (RotaTeq®), human papillomavirus vaccine (Gardasil®), and the candidate zoster vaccine (Zostavax®) as well as numerous early-stage experimental vaccines. He has over 15 years of experience in the development, testing manufacturing, and implementation of vaccines in the United States, Europe and in international programs. Prior to joining Merck, Dr. Shaw worked on vaccines for hepatitis B and Plasmodium falciparum as well as cytokines, cell trafficking and natural inhibitors of inteleukin-1 at Biogen, SA in Geneva, Switzerland.


 


David J. Williams

David J. Williams, is the retired Chairman & CEO of sanofi pasteur, the vaccines business of sanofi-aventis Group.  His 30 year tenure with the company was marked by his rise from Finance Manager to President and CEO. His leadership moved the company from a niche vaccine business to the global leader in vaccine development, production and sales.  In addition, he was Chairman of the company’s board of directors and a Co-Chair of the Supervisory Board of Sanofi Pasteur MSD, a 50-50 joint venture with Merck & Co. that markets and distributes vaccines in Europe.  Prior to sanofi, Mr. Williams spent more than five years at Pricewaterhouse Coopers in their Audit and Healthcare Consulting Group.  Mr. Williams served on the Board of Directors of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), AllOne Health Group, Xcellerex , Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Hospital Service Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania. For many years, he has been affiliated with the University of Scranton, from which he has his undergraduate degree, is a past member of the Board of Trustees and Board of Regents.  He is also one of the founding Board Members of the Medical Education Development Consortium, which is creating the first and only medical college in Northeastern Pennsylvania.  Mr. Williams is spending his retirement serving as a consultant to several vaccine and biotech companies.


 

Samuel Wu, M.D. Ph.D

 
Before joining MedImmune Ventures in 2010, Sam was a principal at SV Life Sciences for eight years, where he invested in and worked with a broad range of biopharmaceutical, platform and medical device companies. Previously, he was an Engagement Manager with McKinsey and Company's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Products practice, where he led teams of consultants serving clients on M&A, portfolio analysis and other strategic issues. Sam holds an A.B. magna cum laude in Biochemistry from Harvard College, attended Stanford University School of Medicine where he earned an M.D. and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry as a Howard Hughes Predoctoral Fellow, and trained in Internal Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.
